All you need to know about honey

When the time comes to harvest the honey, the extraction is carried out. Usually everything has to take place in a honey house, but not all beekeepers have one. But what exactly is the purpose of this and above all what are the important gestures for its maintenance.

What is the purpose of the honey house?

Not all beekeepers have a honey house, but they must have a place to store the supers and extract the honey. As the product is delicate, the room must be clean, dry, well ventilated and protected from looting bees. As a practical matter, a tiled floor is a good option and is washable. If you don't have a professional honey house, a makeshift one may do the trick. In order not to lose time in cleaning after the operations, it is advisable to cover the floor during the honey extraction with a plastic film or linoleum.

In a honey house, the following materials should be used, all of which are made of stainless steel. The tray is uncapped, the electric machine that goes with it, a manual or electric extractor, a filtering tray, a honey pump, a dehumidifier and some various laboratory equipment such as the refractometer for example. In France, there is a large number of honey factories.

Maintenance of the honey house

The premises and all equipment should be kept in a tidy place to facilitate maintenance. If it is a professional honey house, cleaning is done with high pressure. It is also good to know that the cleaning products used must meet the standards imposed by the law concerning the agri-food industries. The role of beekeepers is to ensure that no pests can enter the honey house. If by misfortune, some have managed to find their way in, in this case, disposal products are used which are sometimes dangerous and must be isolated when working on honey.

During extractions, there is always waste. Also to get rid of them, they are grouped in washable containers and they will be thrown out of the work area so as not to contaminate the place and the honey. Regarding the frequency of maintenance, it must be adapted to the products and the way the equipment works. Extraction equipment and drums can only be washed with hot drinking water. Drainage and drying must also be done quickly so that there is no source of contamination. The disinfection of the honey house is done with toxic products. It is therefore essential to rinse after use. When cleaning the floor, it is advisable to avoid products with strong odors since honey is a product sensitive to odors. When cleaning the equipment, it is necessary to respect the doses to avoid that traces are found in the honey. Having a honey house is not easy, if you want the premises and equipment to be more efficient and resistant, it is necessary to respect the rules of hygiene.
